Transcending Factions: Preface Construction of Eryouyuan Ji and Chen Wenzhu's Literary Exploration

The prefatory system of Eryouyuan Ji (《二酉园集》) consists of the prefaces to the individual sub-collections in Chen Wenzhu's collected prose and poetry, together with the general prefaces to the complete compilation. Rather than being occasional pieces composed merely for social exchange, as has often been assumed, these texts function as a carefully orchestrated and highly strategic paratextual apparatus throughout Chen Wenzhu's literary career. Through the solicitation of prefaces and the deliberate arrangement and combination of these texts during the compilation process, Chen constructed a multilayered prefatory system: in the prose collection, prefaces by figures associated with opposing literary camps provided dual endorsement; in the poetry collection, writers from different regions, social groups, and status backgrounds offered a chorus of commendation; and in the general prefaces, two leading arbiters of the literary world jointly established the interpretive framework for the entire collection. In the flourishing print culture of the late sixteenth century, this sophisticated deployment of the "multiple prefaces to a single book" strategy enabled Chen Wenzhu to break through the prevailing model of singular authorization dominated by Wang Shizhen and to discover a new means of participating in the power dynamics of the literary world. At the same time, the prefatory system of Eryouyuan Ji documents Chen's exploration of literary practice that transcended factional boundaries during the transitional period between the decline of the Archaist school and the rise of the Gong'an School.
