Achievements and Experience of Higher Education Development in Macau

The development of Macau's higher education has experienced three major stages since its return to China for 20 years, which are characterized by scale expansion, stable development and quality improvement respectively. It has rapidly developed from quantity to quality and formed a standardized higher education system. Through years of transformation and development, Macau's higher education has made a series of remarkable achievements, including the University of Macau's lease of Hengqin Campus to expand Macau higher education institutions' school space, the establishment of four national key laboratories to lead the cutting-edge scientific research in Macau's higher education, the enactment of the new Higher Education System that upgrades the Higher Education Bureau to handle higher education affairs, and the establishment of an international higher education network to create a world-class higher education development system. Macau's higher education has also provided valuable development experience, such as catching a national platform to integrate into the country's development, improving the supporting system of higher education and standardizing higher education institutions' operation and management mechanism, emphasizing the evaluation of higher education quality to strengthen the continuous self-improvement of higher education institutions, as well as giving play to the integrated cultural characteristics of China and the West to enhance Macau higher education's international competitiveness.
