The Writer as Citizen: Literary Publicity in E. L. Doctorow's Non-fiction Writings

The renowned American writer E. L. Doctorow is best known for his historical novels, through which he achieved distinction in literary history by offering literary writings on twentieth-century American society and history. At the same time, his non-fiction writings articulate his literary philosophy and public stance, expressing a conception of literary publicity grounded in civic identity. This article selects Doctorow's essays, literary criticism, political commentaries, and public speeches, focusing on his objects of writing, authorial position and writing strategies. It explores how he defines the writer's public role and how his creative practice responds to public life. Doctorow rejects the reduction of literature to the expression of private experience; instead, he understands it as a crucial mode of civic participation. For him, the writer must establish a self-conscious relationship among civic identity, authorial responsibility and the social world. Literary works thus function as interventions in public life, even shaping democratic processes and influencing the course of national history. At the level of cultural positioning, Doctorow remains wary of the instrumentalization of literature by market demand and political power. He maintains that literary creation should preserve its distinctiveness and autonomy in order to resist tendencies toward de-publicization, thereby sustaining the space of literary imagination. Moreover, Doctorow consistently practices this conception of literary publicity within his fiction, rendering literature an indispensable medium for linking public life with national history.
