"Up" and "Down" in The Book of Songs——The Concept of Upper and Lower Space and the Expression of Its Location Words

Abstract: In The Book of Songs, "up" and "down" often appear in Airs of the States when they represent the actual dimensional orientation, and rarely appear symmetrically. When "God" and "the land below" represent the supreme god and the human world, most of them appear in the latter Hymns and Odes, and they usually appear symmetrically, indicating that "God", "the land below" and "the people below" manifest themselves through forming an interrelated system. There are differences in spatial orientation and meaning of "Mountains and wetlands", the symmetrical structure on the vertical space of The Book of Songs, and spatial structure of "god- the people below". However, through the "earth", they connect the spatial perception experience of the daily life of Western Zhou Dynasty with the abstract spatial orientation perception displayed in the king's sacrifice and rule. The emphasis on "earth" as an intermediary carrier reflected in the words of spatial location in The Book of Songs can provide more understanding of the cultural origin of the concept of being attached to our native land and the thought of searching for roots in traditional culture.
