A Study on Citizenship Literacy of Macau Senior High School Students: From the Perspective of Social Participation

Abstract: Through the investigation and analysis of 2 536 samples of Macau senior high school students, it is found that there are significant gender differences in senior high school students' literacy, that is to say, girls' civic literacy is better than boys' civic literacy; and parents have a great impact on children's civic literacy, but children generally lack guidance on public issues from parents; besides, teachers are good at listening to the students, yet rarely discuss public issues with the students. The improvement of senior high school students' citizenship is positively correlated with their parents' educational background, their experiences of class cadres and their acquisition of Internet information. Therefore, strengthening parents' concern for public issues, understanding the gender differences of senior high school students and building a two-way mechanism of school-community integration will help to improve senior high school students' citizenship.
