Research on the Deeds of CHEN Qi the Calligrapher of the Southern Song Dynasty

Abstract: CHEN Qi was a famous calligrapher in the Lin'an area of the Southern Song Dynasty, and also an important civilian poet. This article examines and distinguishes his related achievements. CHEN Qi had already started operating the book industry during the Jiatai period, and entered the poetry world due to his acquaintance with poets such as HAN Biao, WEI Zhen, and ZHAO Shixiu. As a local merchant, he failed to participate in the imperial examination and was given various titles such as JIE Yuan, Secret School, Bachelor, and Scholar due to his business in the book industry. After the reconstruction of Yunju Building, many people referred to him as "CHEN Yunju". CHEN's book shop is located on Pengbei Street. Since the Qing Dynasty, collectors have referred to CHEN Qi's engraved books as "Shupeng Ben", which is a fabricated term without a source. CHEN Daoren was another bookseller in Lin'an in the late Southern Song Dynasty, CHEN Si. CHEN Qi's bookstores mainly focused on poetry collections, while CHEN Si's bookstores were characterized by antiques and calligraphy and painting, with obvious differences between them.
