Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Survivor Guilt and Depression among College Students during the Epidemic of COVID-19

Abstract: This study examined the mediating effect of intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination in the relationship be-tween survivor guilt and depression among college students during the epidemic of COVID-19.The Virus Exposure Risk Questionnaire,Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire-67,Event Related Rumination Inventory and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale were employed to investigate the mental health of 2 168 college students during the epidemic of COVID-19.The results showed that (1) the prevalence of mild depressive disorder was 34.40% and the prevalence of major depressive disorder was 17.39%;(2) survivor guilt had a directly positive effect on depression;(3) intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination partly mediated the relationship between survivor guilt and depression. These findings suggested that survivor guilt among college students during the epidemic of COV-ID-19 may have a double-edged effect on depression.
